Ja n 20 04 A multi - wavelength scattered light analysis of the dust grain population in the GGTau circumbinary ring

چکیده
We present the first 3.8 µm image of the dusty ring surrounding the young binary system GG Tau, obtained with the W. M. Keck II 10 m telescope's adap-tive optics system. This is the longest wavelength at which the ring has been detected in scattered light so far, allowing a multi-wavelength analysis of the scattering properties of the dust grains present in this protoplanetary disk in combination with previous, shorter wavelengths, HST images. We find that the scattering phase function of the dust grains in the disk is only weakly dependent on the wavelength. This is inconsistent with dust models inferred from observations of the interstellar medium or dense molecular clouds. In particular, the strongly forward-throwing scattering phase function observed at 3.8 µm implies a significant increase in the population of large (1 µm) grains, which provides direct evidence for grain growth in the ring. However, the grain size distribution required to match the 3.8 µm image of the ring is incompatible with its published 1 µm polarization map, implying that the dust population is not uniform throughout the ring. We also show that our 3.8 µm scattered light image probes a deeper layer of the ring than previous shorter wavelength images, as demonstrated by a shift in the location of the inner edge of the disk's scattered light distribution between 1 and 3.8 µm. We therefore propose a stratified structure for the ring in which the surface layers, located ∼ 50 AU above the ring midplane, contain dust grains that are very similar to those found in dense molecular clouds, while the region of the ring located ∼ 25 AU from the midplane contains significantly larger grains. This stratified structure is likely the result of vertical dust settling and/or preferred grain growth in the densest parts of the ring.

NICMOS images of the GG Tau Circumbinary Disk
We present deep, near-infrared images of the circumbinary disk surrounding the pre–main-sequence binary star, GG Tau A, obtained with NICMOS aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The spatially resolved proto-planetary disk scatters ∼1.5% of the stellar flux, with a near-to-far side flux ratio of ∼1.4, independent of wavelength, and colors that are comparable to the central source all of these prop...
متن کاملMulti-Wavelength Imaging of Young Stellar Object Disks: Toward an Understanding of Disk Structure and Dust Evolution
We review recent progress in high-resolution imaging of scattered light from disks around young stellar objects. Many new disks have been discovered or imaged in scattered light, and improved instrumentation and observing techniques have led to better disk images at optical, near-infrared, and thermal-infrared wavelengths. Multi-wavelength datasets are particularly valuable, as dust particle pr...

Context. Circumstellar discs are expected to be the nursery of planets. Grain growth within such discs is the first step in the planet formation process. The Bok globule CB 26 harbours such a young disc. Aims. We present a detailed model of the edge-on circumstellar disc and its envelope in the Bok globule CB 26. Methods. The model is based on HST near-infrared maps in the I, J, H, and K bands,...
متن کاملHST/WFPC2 Images of the GG Tauri Circumbinary Disk
We present the first visible wavelength images of the GG Tauri circumbinary ring, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. Scattered light from the ring is detected in both V and I band images. The images show that the ring is smooth, except for a small gap that could be a shadow caused by material between the stars and the ring. The spokes seen extending fr...
متن کاملBrilliant Pebbles: a Method for Detection of Very Large Interstellar Grains
A photon of wavelength λ ∼ 1μm interacting with a dust grain of radius ap ∼ 1mm – in other words, a “pebble” – undergoes scattering in the forward direction, largely within a small characteristic diffraction angle θs ∼ λ/ap ∼ 100. Though mm-size dust grains contribute negligibly to the interstellar medium’s visual extinction, the signal they produce in scattered light may be detectable for vari...
